(1670-1736)
natural son of Louis XIV
The legitimized son of King louis XIV and Mme de montespan, Louis-Auguste de Bourbon, duke of Maine was born at Saint-Germain-en-Laye. The regent, Philippe d'Orléans, relieved him of most of the prerogatives granted in the will of Louis XIV. He took part in the cellemare plot (1718) at the instigation of his wife, Anne-Louise Bénédicte de Bour-bon-Condé, duchess of Maine (1676-1753), who held a brilliant court in her château at Sceaux. Imprisoned (1719), then freed in 1720, the duke of Maine then abandoned political life.
